Venezuela earthquake death toll passes 5,000 as IMF releases reconstruction funds
The death toll from last month’s twin earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to 5,069, officials said on Friday.
The two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, struck within one minute of each other on June 24, causing widespread destruction in the coastal state of La Guaira, north of Caracas.

Officials said 16,740 people were injured, and most have already been discharged from hospital.
Interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced that Venezuela has received 346 million US dollars from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support reconstruction efforts.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva confirmed the release of the money, saying it came from Venezuela’s own reserve funds to help meet urgent humanitarian needs.
Around 20,000 people who lost their homes are still living in temporary camps, many of which lack clean water and proper sanitation.
The IMF and World Bank resumed relations with Venezuela earlier this year after years of suspension, allowing the country to access some of its financial resources.
