Spain, Argentina ready for World Cup final as Trump praises tournament

Spain and Argentina are preparing for Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey.

Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, are hoping to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cup titles. Spain are aiming to win their second World Cup after lifting the trophy in 2010.

Tournament organisers said they are closely watching smoke from wildfires in Canada, which has affected air quality in parts of the United States.

More than 80,000 fans are expected at MetLife Stadium. US President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum are both expected to attend the final.

Trump described the tournament as one of the most successful sporting events in history.

Spain captain Rodri said he expects a tough and physical match against Argentina but believes his team can adapt to any style of play.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni praised Messi and urged fans to enjoy watching the 39-year-old play in another World Cup final, calling him a football legend.

Meanwhile, England and France will meet on Saturday in the third-place playoff after both lost their semi-final matches. England coach Thomas Tuchel admitted the defeat to Argentina was painful, while France coach Didier Deschamps said his final World Cup match in charge of France would be an emotional moment.
