Expanded FIFA World Cup attracts more betting, says expert

The company said betting activity has increased by 80 percent, with more people placing bets and more customers taking part.

The 2026 tournament features 48 teams and 104 matches, compared to 32 teams and 64 matches in previous editions.
For Sunday’s final between Spain and Argentina, Sportradar expects to process about 8.5 million betting tickets from bookmakers around the world.
England attracted the highest betting interest during the tournament, followed by France, Argentina and Spain.
The most popular match for bettors was England’s 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina.
Experts said many fans were unsure about expanding the World Cup before it began, but the tournament has produced exciting matches and several surprise results.
However, some bookmakers said they would not support FIFA’s reported plan to expand the tournament further to 64 teams, warning that too many matches could reduce fans’ interest.
