Courtois to put Belgium career on hold

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has decided to put his Belgium career on hold for the next year but has ruled out retiring from international football.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper will miss Belgium’s upcoming Nations League campaign, which will see the team face France, Italy and Turkey over six matches in the next three months.

Courtois said he plans to return to the national team for the European Championship qualifiers, which are scheduled to begin in March 2027.

The decision comes after a busy period for the goalkeeper, who played for Belgium at the 2026 World Cup before being substituted because of an injury during the quarter-final defeat to Spain.

Courtois said Belgium’s new coach, Mark van Bommel, understands his decision and has given him the space to take a break.

The goalkeeper also admitted that he is unsure whether he can maintain the same physical demands for another four years.

Courtois has made 115 appearances for Belgium and remains available for the national team despite his decision to skip the Nations League.

His absence could give other goalkeepers, including Arne Lammens, an opportunity to compete for the starting position before Courtois returns.
