Iraq, US sign 48 agreements during prime minister’s visit
Iraq signed 48 agreements with American companies during Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s visit to the United States, his office said on Saturday.
Many of the agreements are in the oil and energy sector. They involve major companies such as ExxonMobil, Shell, Halliburton, KBR, and GE Vernova.
The two countries also agreed to work together on building a major oil pipeline between Iraq and Syria.
In another deal, Iraq signed an agreement with Starlink to bring its satellite internet service to the country.
Iraq hopes the agreements will help improve its economy, which has been affected by years of conflict, poor infrastructure, corruption, and a drop in oil income.
During the visit, US President Donald Trump met Zaidi at the White House and praised him as a “champion.”
Zaidi, who became prime minister earlier this year, has promised to strengthen Iraq’s economy and reduce the influence of armed groups backed by Iran. He also aims to maintain good relations with both the United States and neighbouring Iran.
