DR Congo wedding fire kills 12

At least 12 people have died after a fire broke out during a wedding celebration in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The fire started overnight from Friday into Saturday at a building in the Lingwala district, where a wedding reception was taking place.

Videos shared on social media showed people packed into a narrow staircase as they tried to escape the burning building.

The government said efforts were still under way to identify the victims. It also ordered systematic inspections of venues used for public events and warned that buildings that fail to meet safety requirements would be closed.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established. However, faulty electrical installations are a common cause of fires in Kinshasa.

Local officials initially reported a higher death toll, with Lingwala mayor Norbert Mushinga saying 22 people had died and several others were injured. The national government later confirmed 12 deaths.

The incident has renewed concerns about fire safety in Kinshasa, a densely populated city where emergency services and safety standards remain a major challenge.
