Trump suggests renaming New Mexico ‘New America’
US President Donald Trump has suggested changing the name of the state of New Mexico to “New America”, in his latest push to rename places across the country.
Trump made the suggestion on Sunday in a post on his social media platform, saying many people had proposed the new name.
He described “New America” as a more prestigious and beautiful name for the state. The White House also reposted an image showing the word “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America”.
However, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham quickly rejected the idea, saying the state’s name was not open for discussion.
“The name isn’t up for debate — it’s been ours since before the United States existed,” she said.
She also accused Trump of trying to distract Americans from issues such as rising fuel prices and other economic problems.
There is currently no official process to rename New Mexico, and Trump does not have the constitutional power to unilaterally change the name of a US state. Any legal change would require action within the state and at the federal level.
Trump has recently pushed several other name changes. He renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” in 2025 and recently ordered Lake Ontario to be called “Lake America” in the US.
He also suggested last week that the Strait of Hormuz could be renamed “Trump Strait”, although he later appeared to indicate that he was not serious about the idea.
