Macron gives Starmer France’s highest honour

French President Emmanuel Macron has awarded Britain’s outgoing Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, France’s highest honour, the Legion d’honneur.

Starmer received the award on Monday in Paris during a meeting of leaders supporting Ukraine.

Macron said the award recognised Starmer’s leadership and his efforts to strengthen Europe’s security, support Ukraine, and improve relations between France and the United Kingdom.

Starmer is the first British prime minister to receive the honour.

The 63-year-old is expected to leave office within days after losing the support of his Labour Party following several unpopular policy changes.

He attended France’s annual Bastille Day military parade in Paris as Macron’s guest alongside other leaders supporting Ukraine.

Starmer became prime minister after Labour won the 2024 general election. During his time in office, he worked to rebuild Britain’s ties with European countries after Brexit.

He is expected to be succeeded by Andy Burnham as Labour leader and prime minister.
