Ghana Police arrest Nigerian, kill two suspected robbers in Accra

The Ghana Police Service says it has arrested a Nigerian, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, and killed two other suspected members of a robbery gang during an operation in Accra.

The police said the operation took place on Thursday and foiled an alleged plan to attack banks in the Labone area.

According to the police, it received information around 10:45 a.m. that the gang was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank in the area.

A police team was sent to Labone, where officers found the suspects in vehicles parked near the banks.

The police said one vehicle sped away after the suspects saw the officers. Maazi was later arrested, while another person in the vehicle escaped.

The occupants of a second vehicle also allegedly tried to escape while shooting at the police. Officers returned fire, killing two suspects, according to the police.

Another suspect escaped during the operation, and the police said a manhunt was underway to arrest him.

Two vehicles allegedly linked to the suspects were recovered, along with a blow pistol.

The police said Maazi remained in custody and was helping with the investigation. The bodies of the two suspects were taken to a morgue for identification and autopsy.

However, GCB Bank denied that its Labone branch was robbed or that anyone attempted to rob the bank.

The bank said its premises and operations were not affected and that no customer, employee, money or property was harmed.

The police have not said whether the alleged plan involved entering the banks or targeting customers and other people in the area.
