FRSC arrests driver, intercepts overloaded vehicle in Abia, FCT

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has stepped up its campaign against dangerous driving, securing the imprisonment of a driver in Abia State and intercepting an overloaded vehicle in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

A mobile court presided over by Magistrate C. E. Nwankpa sentenced a commercial driver, Azubuike Dominic, to one month in prison at the Afara Correctional Centre.

Dominic was initially arrested for driving a Toyota Hiace without a valid driver’s licence but reportedly escaped. He was later arrested several kilometres away after FRSC officials and military personnel pursued him.

In Nyanya, FCT, FRSC officials also intercepted a Mitsubishi Canter truck and found 15 people and eight motorcycles hidden among goods inside the vehicle.

The driver, Umar Muhammadu, could not produce a valid licence and allegedly offered an FRSC official N500 as a bribe.

He and the other occupants of the vehicle were handed over to the Mararaba Divisional Police Officer for further investigation.

Ohaeri said the operations showed the FRSC’s growing use of intelligence, technology and cooperation with other security agencies to detect dangerous road practices.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, warned commercial drivers against escaping arrest, overloading their vehicles and offering bribes to officials.

He said, “On the road to a safer Nigeria, there will be no hiding place for reckless and dangerous driving.”
