Chelsea sign veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton
Chelsea have signed experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton in a deal reportedly worth £5 million ($6.7 million).
The 35-year-old has signed a two-year contract and will join Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Welbeck’s arrival marks a change in Chelsea’s recent transfer strategy, which has mainly focused on signing younger players with long-term potential.
He is the first player over the age of 26 that Chelsea have paid a transfer fee for since signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2022.
Speaking after the move, Welbeck said he was proud to join a club with Chelsea’s history and ambition.
He said he had positive talks with Alonso and is eager to help the club compete for trophies.
Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, and Alonso is looking to add experience to his squad.
Welbeck impressed for Brighton last season, scoring 13 Premier League goals in 37 matches. The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward has also made 42 appearances for England.
His arrival could affect the futures of Chelsea strikers Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu.
Welbeck spent six years at Brighton after joining from Watford in 2020. During that time, he scored 51 goals, provided 18 assists and became the club’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League.
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom praised Welbeck for his leadership, professionalism and contribution to the club’s success.
