Zambia votes as Hichilema seeks second term

Zambians will vote on Thursday in a general election expected to give President Hakainde Hichilema a second term, although rising living costs could affect his support.

Hichilema has led Zambia since 2021 and is campaigning on his economic record. His government has overseen the country’s debt restructuring and an economic recovery after Zambia defaulted on its debt in 2020.

His main challenger is Brian Mundubile, an experienced lawmaker and first-time presidential candidate backed by an opposition alliance that includes supporters of late former President Edgar Lungu.

The presidential, parliamentary and local elections will be held on the same day. A presidential candidate must win more than 50 per cent of the vote to avoid a run-off.

Analysts expect Hichilema to win, partly because the opposition remains divided.

However, many Zambians say they have yet to feel the benefits of the economic recovery, despite lower inflation and improved economic indicators.

The election has also been affected by concerns over political repression and the fairness of the vote, although the government denies the allegations.

Voting will take place from 6am to 6pm, with results expected on Monday.
