Just-In: US Raises Alarm Over Possible Attacks In Abuja

The US government warned on Sunday that there is a high risk of terrorist attacks in Nigeria, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a security alert issued on October 23, 2022, the US Embassy in Abuja stated that the targets for the attacks include government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transportation terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organizations.

“There is elevated risk of terror attacks in Nigeria, specifically in Abuja,” the alert seen by BusinessDay read. “Targets may include, but are not limited to government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organisations.”

As a result, the Embassy has announced that it will provide reduced services until further notice.

The embassy also advised citizens to: avoid non-essential travel or movement; day alert; avoid crowds; review personal security plans; keep their cell phone charged in case of emergency; and carry proper identification.

Experts had earlier warned that release of the suspected terrorists will worsen insecurity in the FCT and across the country.
