Edo Assembly Speaker resigns amid impeachment move
The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from his position.
His media aide, Ivy Ebojele, confirmed the resignation on Monday, August 17, 2026, saying more details would be released later.
Agbebaku reportedly resigned after some lawmakers moved to impeach him.
He represents Owan West Constituency and was elected Speaker of the Eighth Assembly in June 2023.
His leadership came under pressure in May 2024 after he suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach him and other principal officers.
Yekini Idiaye, who represents Akoko-Edo Constituency I, has now emerged as the new Speaker.
Idiaye said the change was also in line with an arrangement that when the governor comes from Edo Central, the Speaker should come from Edo North.
Speaking after Monday’s plenary, Idiaye accused Agbebaku of poor leadership and alleged corruption.
He said the Assembly had faced repeated adjournments and other problems under Agbebaku’s leadership, which he claimed affected the state government’s work.
Idiaye said the lawmakers decided to remove him to support Governor Monday Okpebholo and help move the state forward.
