Como sign Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez on loan
Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez has joined Italian club Como on a season-long loan for the 2026/27 campaign after losing his place as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper following the arrival of Emiliano Martínez.
The 28-year-old started Chelsea’s first Premier League match of the season, a 3–2 win over Fulham, but came under criticism after conceding a goal from Josh King at his near post.
Chelsea subsequently signed Argentina international Martínez from Aston Villa for £7.5 million, with Martínez starting in the club’s 4–3 victory over Brighton. Sánchez was left out of the squad.
Sánchez joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2023 for around £25 million and has made more than 100 appearances for the London club. He has also been part of Chelsea’s squads that won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
His move to Como will reunite him with former Chelsea teammate Cesc Fàbregas, who is now the Italian club’s head coach, as well as defender Trevoh Chalobah.
Fàbregas praised Sánchez’s experience and his ability to play with the ball at his feet, saying he can bring valuable qualities to the Como squad.
The loan deal is for the entire 2026/27 season and does not include an option or obligation for Como to make the transfer permanent.
The move also gives Sánchez an opportunity to play in the Champions League and revive his career after falling down the pecking order at Chelsea.
