Argentina beat England late to reach World Cup final

Argentina came from behind to beat England 2-1 on Wednesday and reach the World Cup final, thanks to two late goals and another strong performance from Lionel Messi.

England looked set to reach their first World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute.

But Argentina fought back in the closing minutes.

Messi set up Enzo Fernandez, who scored the equaliser in the 85th minute. Then, in added time, Messi crossed the ball for substitute Lautaro Martinez, who headed home the winning goal in the 92nd minute.

The victory keeps Argentina’s hopes alive of winning back-to-back World Cup titles, something no country has achieved since Brazil in 1962.

Argentina will now face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

At 39, Messi will play in his third World Cup final, becoming only the second player after Brazil’s Cafu to achieve that feat.

England, meanwhile, will play France in the third-place match on Saturday.

England were close to victory but could not hold on after taking the lead. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made several important saves, but Argentina’s late pressure finally paid off.

The defeat is a big disappointment for England, who were hoping to reach their first World Cup final in 60 years.
