Putin Announces Temporary Ceasefire in Ukraine to Mark World War II Anniversary

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine.

According to Newsweek, the ceasefire is to honor the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The Kremlin said in a statement that fighting will stop from midnight on May 7–8 until midnight on May 10–11, based on humanitarian reasons.

Russia hopes Ukraine will also stop fighting during this time. However, Russia warned that if Ukraine breaks the ceasefire, Russian forces will respond strongly.

The Kremlin also said it is ready to hold peace talks without any conditions and wants to work with international partners to find a solution to the crisis.

This is not the first time Putin has announced a temporary truce. Earlier, he declared a 30-hour ceasefire for Easter.
