Former PDP Chairman Bamanga Tukur dies at 90

Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bamanga Tukur, has died at the age of 90.

Tukur, a former governor of the old Gongola State, reportedly died on Friday, according to reports from Nigerian media.

He was born on September 15, 1935, and had a long career in public service, business and politics.

Tukur served as governor of Gongola State in 1983 before later becoming Minister of Industries during the administration of former military Head of State, Sani Abacha.

He also served as the chief executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982 and was involved in several business organisations.

In March 2012, Tukur was elected National Chairman of the PDP, then Nigeria’s ruling party.

He resigned from the position in January 2014 after facing growing pressure within the party. He was succeeded by Adamu Mu’azu.

Tukur later announced his retirement from active partisan politics in 2015, saying he wanted to give younger politicians an opportunity to take over.

He remained an influential figure in Nigerian business and political circles, particularly in Adamawa State, until his death.
