Insurgency destroyed over 5,000 schools in Borno — Zulum
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has said the insurgency destroyed more than 5,000 school structures in the state and left about 2.2 million children out of school at the peak of the crisis.
Zulum disclosed this on Sunday in Maiduguri while commissioning newly completed projects, including schools, roads and a flyover.
He said fewer than 500,000 children were enrolled in school at the height of the insurgency, while many teachers and school administrators also lost their lives in the course of duty.
The governor said his administration had invested more than ₦46.9 billion in basic and secondary education between 2025 and 2026 as part of efforts to rebuild the sector.
According to him, the number of functional senior secondary schools in the state increased from 34 across eight local government areas in 2019 to 129 across 25 local government areas in 2026.
He added that school enrolment had also risen from 766,551 learners in 2019 to 1,801,295 in 2026.
Zulum said his administration had constructed more than 120 mega schools across the state, alongside other interventions aimed at restoring access to education and rebuilding communities affected by the insurgency.
He said rebuilding schools was not only about providing infrastructure but also about restoring public confidence and giving children affected by the conflict an opportunity to secure a better future.
