Atletico Madrid Holds On to Beat Barcelona and Reach Champions League Semis

Atletico Madrid lost the second leg against Barcelona 2–1. But because they won the first leg 2–0, they still advanced to the Champions League semi-finals. The final score over both games was 3–2 for Atletico.

Barcelona started very strong. Lamine Yamal scored after just 4 minutes. Ferran Torres made it 2–0 in the 24th minute. That meant the tie was level on aggregate.

But Atletico fought back. Ademola Lookman scored in the 31st minute to make it 2–1 on the night. That goal gave Atletico the lead again overall.

The game was rough and physical. Several players got hurt and bled. Barcelona also had a player sent off. Eric Garcia received a red card near the end for fouling an Atletico player who was running toward the goal.

Barcelona tried hard to score a third goal but could not. Atletico held on through 8 minutes of extra time at the end.

This is Atletico’s first time in the semi-finals since 2017. They have never won the Champions League. They lost the finals in 2014 and 2016.

Atletico will now face either Arsenal or Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals.

Barcelona’s players said they were unlucky but believe the team is improving. Barcelona last won the Champions League in 2015.
