Algeria cuts diplomatic ties with UAE

Algeria has cut diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates, accusing the Gulf country of taking what it described as “provocative or hostile” actions.

Algeria said on Thursday that it had exhausted all efforts to preserve its relationship with the UAE.

It also ordered the UAE ambassador to leave the country within 48 hours.

Algeria did not give details of the specific actions that led to the decision. However, relations between the two countries have been tense for several years.

The UAE said it hoped the diplomatic break would be temporary and that it remained committed to maintaining ties with the Algerian people and protecting their shared interests.

The two countries have disagreed over several regional issues, including the Western Sahara dispute. The UAE supports Morocco’s position on the territory, while Algeria backs the Polisario Front’s demand for independence.

They also have different positions on Israel. The UAE established diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020, while Algeria remains opposed to normalising relations with Israel.

The diplomatic crisis adds to growing tensions in North Africa and the wider Middle East.
