Western countries are preparing for war with Russia — Lavrov
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused Western countries of preparing for war against Russia while promoting what he described as a “myth” about a threat coming from Moscow.
Lavrov made the remarks on Thursday at the opening of the fourth congress of the International Russophile Movement in Moscow.
He said Russia would be able to respond adequately to any external threat to its security.
“Today, the ruling circles and elites of most Western countries are promoting a myth about a threat emanating from Russia, actively preparing for war against our country,” Lavrov said.
Lavrov also criticised Western countries for accusing Moscow of undermining European values.
However, he drew a distinction between US officials and European leaders, saying Washington remained willing to maintain dialogue with Moscow despite major differences between the two sides.
“There is an important difference between the US and European elites. They are ready to talk. Even when positions are radically, diametrically opposed, it is always important,” he said.
Lavrov said Moscow remained open to serious discussions with foreign officials genuinely willing to engage in dialogue.
He added that foreign officials should not travel to Russia merely to repeat their public criticism of the country.
“Condemnation does not require coming here. But we are always open to serious conversations,” Lavrov said.
