Iran will not reopen Strait of Hormuz until Trump and Netanyahu are removed
Mohammad Bagher Zolqadr, political adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, has said Iran will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are removed from power.
Zolqadr made the statement in a message marking 200 days of what he described as Iran’s resistance against its enemies.
“Our fighters will not open the Strait of Hormuz until the criminal Trump and the bloodthirsty Netanyahu are pulled down from the throne of power,” he said, describing the closure of the waterway as the first stage of Iran’s revenge.
He also referred to Iranians killed in attacks on Minab and Lamerd, as well as Iranian military personnel who died in the conflict, saying Iran intended to avenge their deaths.
The latest demand goes further than conditions Zolqadr outlined in August, when he said the United States would have to end military operations, withdraw forces from around Iran, lift sanctions, release frozen Iranian assets and pay compensation before the Strait of Hormuz could fully reopen.
However, it remains unclear whether Zolqadr’s latest demand represents a formal negotiating position of the Iranian government or his own political message.
His statement came as Trump said Iran wanted to reach a deal to end the war, highlighting the differences between Washington’s public position and hardline statements from Tehran.
The Strait of Hormuz is a major global energy route, and the disruption of shipping through the waterway has contributed to concerns over oil and energy supplies.
