Tinubu approves salary increase for Nigerian armed forces
President Bola Tinubu has approved salary increases of between 30 and 80 per cent for members of Nigeria’s armed forces, with about 250,000 personnel set to benefit.
In a Tuesday statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the new salary structure will take effect from September 1, 2026.

Under the arrangement, officers above the rank of colonel, including brigadier-generals, major-generals, lieutenant-generals and generals, will receive a 30 per cent pay rise.
Personnel from colonel down to warrant officer will get a 50 per cent increase, while those from private to staff sergeant will receive an 80 per cent increase.
The new package will raise the annual salary bill for the armed forces from N660 billion to N924 billion.
President Tinubu said the increase reflects his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their efforts in tackling banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.
He said the government would continue to modernise the armed forces by providing better weapons, technology and other support needed to carry out their duties effectively.
The president added that security remains key to national development and pledged continued support for the military and other security agencies in protecting lives and property across the country.
He also urged members of the armed forces to see the salary increase as a sign of the government’s appreciation for their service and dedication to the nation.
