Rescuers save cat from Venezuela earthquake rubble
A rescue team in Venezuela has saved a weak cat that was trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building nearly a month after the country’s deadly earthquakes.
More than 5,100 people died when two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24. The coastal state of La Guaira suffered the worst damage.

Volunteer rescuer Andres Carvajal said he saw the cat while searching through the ruins of a destroyed housing complex.
“The cat got scared when it saw us and ran deeper into the rubble,” he told AFP.
The 21-year-old university student said he removed one of his gloves, placed some cat food on his arm, and waited patiently. The hungry cat slowly came closer and eventually ate the food.
Carvajal, whose nickname since primary school has been “the cat,” had written the words “El Gato” on his rescue helmet.
He and other students from the Central University of Venezuela have been helping in rescue operations since the disaster.
After the rescue, the cat was taken to a medical camp where veterinarians treated it, gave it fluids, cleaned it, and later moved it to an animal shelter.
Carvajal said rescuing the cat brought hope after weeks of tragedy.
“It is impossible not to care about every life here. Finding this little cat is a small ray of hope,” he said.
