PRINCESS JOY IDAM TO NAFDAC: VERIFY CLAIMS OF HARMFUL CHEMICALS IN SANITARY PADS
Weekenders Magazine Publisher Calls for Urgent Verification to Protect Women and Girls
The Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Weekenders Magazine, Princess Joy Omagha Idam, has charged the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Moji Adeyeye, to urgently launch an investigation into claims that some sanitary pads may contain harmful chemicals.
Princess Idam said the issue should not be treated as mere speculation, considering the millions of women and girls who use sanitary pads regularly. She stressed that Nigerians deserve clear scientific answers from the agency responsible for regulating the safety of products consumed and used by the public.
She called on NAFDAC to conduct independent laboratory tests on sanitary pads available in the Nigerian market and determine whether they contain chemicals that could pose health risks to users.
“This is not about creating fear or attacking manufacturers. It is about protecting Nigerian women and girls and giving the public accurate information. NAFDAC must verify these claims and tell Nigerians the truth,” Princess Idam said.
She further urged NAFDAC to make the outcome of its investigation public and, where necessary, take appropriate regulatory action against any product found to fall below required safety standards.
Princess Idam also called on manufacturers and importers of sanitary products to cooperate fully with any investigation by NAFDAC, stressing that the health and safety of consumers must remain the priority over commercial interests.
She said the public deserves confidence in the products they use every month, adding that a prompt and transparent investigation by NAFDAC would help separate facts from rumours and provide women and families with the information they need to make informed decisions.
