Obi will serve only one term if elected, says Kwankwaso

The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, says the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has agreed to serve only one four-year term if elected in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Kwankwaso said he and Obi signed a formal agreement to support a one-term presidency in line with the principle of power rotation.

He said the agreement means Obi would serve from 2027 to 2031 and then support the return of the presidency to northern Nigeria.

When asked if he trusted Obi to keep the agreement, Kwankwaso said he believed he would.

“Yes, I do. Based on what I now know about him, I don’t think he will change his mind when the time comes,” he said.

Kwankwaso also said an NDC government would be willing to talk with terrorists and other criminal groups as part of efforts to improve security.

He said dialogue would work alongside military operations and other security measures to restore peace.

“Of course, we will talk to everybody,” he said when asked if the government would negotiate with terrorists.

However, he stressed that security forces would still take strong action against criminals whenever necessary.

Kwankwaso said people living in communities affected by insecurity often know those behind the attacks and where they hide. He said his administration would rebuild trust between local communities and security agencies to improve intelligence gathering.

He also explained why he chose to run with Obi, saying both leaders share similar ideas on governance and national development.

“Peter is a very serious politician who cares about the country. When we compared our policy plans, we found that we shared the same vision, with only a few differences. That made it easy for us to work together,” he said.
