La Liga chief accuses FIFA of damaging football with World Cup expansion
The president of Spain’s La Liga, Javier Tebas, has criticised FIFA over plans to discuss expanding the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams.
Speaking to Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tebas said FIFA was acting irresponsibly and harming the football industry.

He said football is much bigger than the World Cup and warned that expanding the tournament would hurt domestic leagues that provide thousands of jobs.
“They are destroying the football industry for a tournament that lasts only about 40 days and involves only a small number of players,” Tebas said.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently confirmed that discussions are taking place about increasing the number of teams to 64 for the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted mainly by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with some matches also taking place in Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.
Tebas said La Liga has repeatedly raised concerns about the growing number of international matches.
He argued that football needs fewer national team competitions and stronger protection for domestic leagues, which he described as the foundation of the sport.
Tebas also said Infantino’s time as FIFA president was “over”, claiming the organisation’s current leadership was making poor decisions about the future of football.
