The Nigerian government has banned the import of 17 goods into the country. These include bagged cement, frozen chicken, sugary drinks, detergents, soaps, and other items.
The ban was announced in a circular signed by the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, on April 1, 2026.

Most of the banned goods come from countries that are not part of ECOWAS (the West African regional group).
The ban is part of Nigeria’s tax and trade rules for 2026, which affect 127 items in total.

1. Live or dead birds, including frozen chicken
2. Pork and beef, including tongues, livers, and shoulders of cows
3. Bird eggs (except eggs used for breeding and research)
4. Refined vegetable oil (except linseed, castor, and olive oil, and hydrogenated fats) and crude vegetable oil
5. Cane or beet sugar, and pure sugar in solid form with added flavor or color
6. Cocoa butter, cocoa powder, cocoa cakes, and cocoa fat and oil
7. Tomatoes — whole, cut, as paste, or as concentrates
8. Sugared or flavored water, mineral water, and non-alcoholic drinks
9. Bagged cement
10. Medicines
11. Waste medicines (pharmaceutical waste)
12. NPK mineral or chemical fertilizers
13. Soaps and detergents
14. Corrugated paper, cartons, boxes, and cases
15. Hollow glass bottles larger than 150 ml
16. Flat-rolled iron or steel products that are 600mm or wider, coated or covered, and corrugated
17. Ballpoint pens and refills
