Mbappe suffers knee injury as Zidane gets debut France win
Real Madrid forward, Kylian Mbappe scored the only goal as France beat Türkiye 1–0 on Friday to give the new French coach, Zinedine Zidane, a winning start as national team coach, but the victory was overshadowed by a knee injury to the captain.
The talismanic player struck in the 55th minute after being set up by Michael Olise, extending his record for France to 67 international goals.
But Mbappe was hurt as he took the shot, who briefly returned to the pitch after receiving treatment before going down again and being replaced by Désiré Doué in the 58th minute.
The French Football Federation later said Mbappe had suffered a knee tendon injury and would return to Madrid for treatment.
Zidane said he did not want to take any risks with his captain.
“He has swelling in the knee. It’s not encouraging, so we’re not going to take any risks,” Zidane said after the match.
The victory gave Zidane three points in his first match in charge after replacing Didier Deschamps, who led France for 14 years.
France will next face Belgium away on Monday before hosting Italy and Belgium in October.
Zidane became the first France coach since Aimé Jacquet in 1994 to win his first match in charge.
