A Federal High Court in Abuja has set today, May 8, for the hearing of a case trying to stop former President Goodluck Jonathan from running in the 2027 presidential election.
The case was filed by a lawyer named Johnmary Jideobi.

He asked the court to say that Jonathan is not allowed to run for president again under the Nigerian Constitution.
Jideobi also asked the court to stop Jonathan from joining any political party as a presidential candidate.
He also wants to stop the election commission, INEC, from accepting or publishing Jonathan’s name for the election.
Jonathan, INEC, and the Attorney-General of the Federation are the defendants in the case.
The lawyer argued that Jonathan already finished the remaining term of the late President Yar’Adua after he died in 2010. Then Jonathan won and served another full term in 2011.
So he has already been president two times.
The court papers say that if Jonathan runs and wins in 2027, he will be sworn in as president for the third time. The lawyer says this would break the Constitution.
He says he filed the case for the public good, to protect the rule of law and the Constitution.
