The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Aliyu Mukhtar Betara, has pledged to personally fund and facilitate the construction of a befitting national secretariat for the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists in Abuja.
Betara made the commitment while receiving a delegation of NAWOJ, led by its National Chairperson, Aisha Ibrahim, during a courtesy visit to his office.

Responding to the association’s request for support to develop its newly acquired land in Lugbe, Abuja, the lawmaker assured that he would take full responsibility for the project. He also promised to engage the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to secure the necessary government backing.
“I will build it for you. I assure you, I will personally ensure that NAWOJ has a befitting national secretariat,” Betara said, adding that discussions with the minister would help fast-track the process.
He further advised NAWOJ leadership to ensure all required documentation is in place to ease approvals and implementation.
Betara also endorsed the upcoming Women in Security Summit and Awards (WINSEC) 2026, an initiative of NAWOJ in collaboration with African Independent Television (AIT). He described the programme as timely and impactful, noting that it recognises courage, commitment, and sacrifice in national security service.
The lawmaker commended NAWOJ for promoting professional journalism and amplifying women’s voices across the country, while also appreciating the association for recognising his contributions to constituency development and women empowerment.
Earlier, Aisha Ibrahim said the visit was to formally notify Betara of his nomination for an award, citing his impactful projects, particularly in empowering women and youths. She also disclosed that the association had secured a Certificate of Occupancy for land in Lugbe for the construction of its national secretariat.
In his response, Betara expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed his readiness to support the association, pledging continued collaboration.
The visit underscores growing collaboration between policymakers and the media in strengthening institutions and advancing the role of women in journalism in Nigeria.
