Inter Miami signs Casemiro as MLS opens investigation

Inter Miami have signed Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, but Major League Soccer (MLS) has launched an investigation into the transfer.

The 34-year-old joined the club as a free agent after Manchester United decided not to renew his contract.

Casemiro, who has made 91 appearances for Brazil and won five UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid, will now play alongside Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul at Inter Miami.

Inter Miami’s managing owner, Jorge Mas, said the signing shows the club’s ambition to become one of the best football clubs in the world.

However, shortly after the announcement, MLS said it was investigating claims that Inter Miami may have broken league rules during the transfer.

The investigation centres on MLS rules that require clubs to secure discovery rights before negotiating with certain high-profile players. Reports say LA Galaxy held Casemiro’s discovery rights before Inter Miami completed the deal.

MLS said it would release details of the agreement between the two clubs after the investigation is completed.

Inter Miami have previously been punished by MLS. In 2020, the club was fined $2 million for breaking the league’s salary cap rules during the signing of French midfielder Blaise Matuidi.

Casemiro said he joined Inter Miami because he wants to continue winning trophies and help the club achieve greater success.
