FIFA probes Argentina players over World Cup final misconduct
FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against several Argentina players and an official over their behaviour after the team’s 1–0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
The world football governing body announced on Wednesday that some Argentina players and staff confronted Spain’s players after the final whistle in New York.

Those under investigation include Argentina’s Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and Leandro Paredes, as well as team official Roberto Ayala. Spain midfielder Pablo Martín Páez Gavira (Gavi) was also involved in the incident.
The individuals could face disciplinary action over allegations ranging from assault to unsporting behaviour.
FIFA is also investigating Argentina over a banner displayed by players after their 2–1 semi-final win against England. The banner read: “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”), referring to the long-running territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
According to FIFA, the investigation will examine possible violations of its rules on political or non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct, discrimination, racist behaviour, and match safety and security.
The governing body also cited alleged discriminatory chants and gestures, delayed kick-offs, failure to follow match and security protocols, the display of inappropriate messages by players and fans, and objects thrown by spectators during several of Argentina’s matches at the 2026 World Cup.
