Ex-Hong Kong prison officer jailed for assaulting inmate
A court in Hong Kong has sentenced a former prison officer to three years in prison for assaulting an inmate, an attack that left the victim seriously injured and needing surgery.
The former officer, Tam Lik-chung, pleaded guilty to the assault, which took place in December 2023 at a correctional facility for young offenders.

According to the court, the victim, Chiu Hei-tik, was being held on remand over a robbery case.
During the trial, Chiu said the incident happened after he threw talcum powder at the officer during a game. He told the court that Tam ordered him to a stairwell, where he allegedly beat him with a wooden stick while two other inmates restrained him.
The victim suffered serious anal and rectal injuries and was taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Tam pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and attempting to obstruct justice.
Three inmates who helped carry out the assault were also convicted and sentenced to between four and six months in prison, while another inmate and Tam’s supervisor were acquitted.
Human rights group Amnesty International said in a 2025 report that prisoners in Hong Kong face problems including physical abuse, long periods of solitary confinement and poor prison conditions. The Hong Kong government rejected the report, describing it as a “malicious smear.”
