Alonso says Mudryk’s Chelsea return was an emotional moment

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has described Mykhailo Mudryk’s return to first-team football as an emotional moment, saying his decision to play the winger was about more than football.

Mudryk made his first appearance in 20 months when he came on as a late substitute in Chelsea’s 1-0 pre-season defeat to Juventus in Hong Kong.

The Ukraine international had been out of action since December 2024 because of anti-doping proceedings, which were resolved only a few days ago.

After returning to training earlier this week, Mudryk completed two sessions before Alonso decided to give him a few minutes on the pitch.

“I’m really pleased for him,” Alonso said after the match.

“It was emotional for everyone at the club to see him back.

“When I told him before the game that he could play 10 or 15 minutes, he was really happy. After such a long time, it was a great feeling for him and for everyone.”

Alonso said the decision was meant to help Mudryk settle back into the team after his long absence.

“It was more than a football decision. It was a human and emotional decision to give him confidence and let him feel the support from the club and the fans.”

The Chelsea manager also gave an update on Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill, who both missed the friendly against Juventus.

He said neither player has a serious injury, but the club is being careful during pre-season.

“They both had some discomfort after knocks,” Alonso said.

“It’s nothing serious, but we don’t want to take any risks. We’ll monitor them day by day.”

Chelsea will continue their preparations for the new Premier League season, with Palmer and Colwill expected to be assessed before returning to action.
