Africa’s Biggest Industrial Opportunity Lies in Processing What It Already Has — RMRDC
Africa’s biggest industrial opportunity may not lie in discovering more resources but in learning to process the ones it already has, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) has said.
The Council is using the African Raw Materials Summit (ARMS) 2026 to push a continental shift from the traditional “pit-to-port” model, where raw materials leave Africa with little processing, towards a system in which African resources feed African factories.
The second edition of ARMS is scheduled for 19-20 October 2026 at the Abuja Continental Hotel, with the theme “From African Feedstock to African Factory.” The official summit programme says the event will focus on processing African agricultural and mineral raw materials within the continent, strengthening regional value chains and improving manufacturing competitiveness.
Speaking on the summit, the Director-General of RMRDC, Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso, said Africa needed to move from exporting low-margin primary commodities to producing and exporting higher-value industrial goods.
He said the transformation would require more than extraction, identifying logistics, policy, circular sustainability, continental integration and capital-backed innovation as critical areas for action.
One of the key proposals is the development of a circular industrial economy in which agricultural waste, mine tailings, scrap metals and biomass are recovered and converted into feedstock for other production processes.
Ike-Muonso said this would reduce waste and raw-material costs while supporting more sustainable and climate-resilient manufacturing.
He also pointed to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as an important platform for developing regional value chains.
According to him, African countries should leverage their different resources and industrial capacities to produce goods within the continent rather than operating as isolated markets.
The official ARMS programme similarly places emphasis on cross-border logistics, supply chains, quality standards, backward integration and regional value chains.
The summit’s Head of Secretariat, Rachael Kotso, and Director, Directorate of Corporate Affairs, Chinyere Nnamdi-Anum, are also part of the team driving awareness of the continental platform.
The organisers say the summit will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, academics, researchers, manufacturers and entrepreneurs to examine how Africa can retain more value from its natural resources.
For RMRDC, the central question is no longer simply how much Africa can extract, but how much economic value it can retain by processing those resources before they leave the continent.
ARMS 2026 is therefore being positioned as a platform for turning that principle into practical partnerships among governments, investors, researchers and manufacturers.
