West Bank woman gives birth to stillborn baby after ambulance delay at checkpoint
A pregnant Palestinian woman gave birth to a stillborn baby in an ambulance after it was delayed at an Israeli military checkpoint in the occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian health workers.
The 28-year-old woman, who was six months pregnant, was said to be unconscious and bleeding heavily when medics picked her up from her home near Nablus on Monday.
The ambulance crew said they had to take a longer route because some roads were closed. When they reached a military checkpoint, they said Israeli soldiers stopped them for more than 30 minutes despite explaining that they were carrying a critically ill patient.
During the delay, a nurse delivered the baby inside the ambulance, but the baby was stillborn.
After the ambulance was allowed to continue, the woman was taken to Rafidia Hospital in Nablus, where doctors carried out emergency surgery to stop the bleeding. Hospital officials said she is now in a stable condition.
The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the incident.
The army has recently increased security operations and road closures across the West Bank following deadly clashes between Israeli settlers and Palestinians.
Violence in the West Bank has risen sharply since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
