Weekenders Magazine Executive Director Urges Governor Nwifuru to Order the Immediate and Unconditional Release of Remaining Amasiri Detainees

The Executive Director of Weekenders Media Commercial Limited, publishers of Weekenders Magazine, Princess Joy Omagha Idam, has passionately appealed to the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, to exercise the powers of his office by ordering the immediate and unconditional release of the remaining Amasiri indigenes still being held in detention following the unfortunate crisis in the community.

Princess Idam acknowledged and appreciated the Ebonyi State Government for the earlier release of some detainees, describing the action as a commendable step towards restoring hope and confidence among the people. However, she maintained that the pursuit of justice and genuine reconciliation remains incomplete as long as innocent citizens continue to languish in detention.

She stressed that every Nigerian is entitled to the constitutional rights of liberty, fair hearing and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court of law. She therefore urged the Governor to demonstrate his renowned commitment to justice, fairness and compassionate leadership by ensuring that no innocent Amasiri son or daughter remains behind bars.

According to her, the continued detention of the remaining Amasiri indigenes has imposed severe emotional, psychological and economic hardship on their families. Many homes have been deprived of their breadwinners, children have been left without adequate care and education, while elderly parents continue to endure pain and uncertainty over the fate of their loved ones.

Princess Idam noted that the prolonged detention also poses a serious challenge to the ongoing peace-building and reconciliation efforts in Amasiri, emphasizing that lasting peace can only flourish where justice, equity and respect for human rights prevail. She called on all stakeholders—including traditional rulers, political leaders, religious institutions, security agencies, youth groups and other community leaders—to embrace dialogue, reconciliation and lawful means of resolving conflicts in the overall interest of Ebonyi State.

She expressed confidence in Governor Nwifuru’s leadership and unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of all Ebonyi citizens, irrespective of political affiliation, community or social status. She appealed to the Governor to seize this opportunity to further demonstrate statesmanship by facilitating the unconditional release of the remaining detainees, describing such a decision as a bold act of justice, mercy and reconciliation that would heal wounds, strengthen public trust and promote enduring peace across Amasiri and Ebonyi State.

The Executive Director reaffirmed that Weekenders Magazine will continue to champion justice, accountability, peaceful coexistence, good governance, respect for the rule of law and the protection of fundamental human rights. She emphasized that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere where justice is served, citizens’ rights are respected and peace is deliberately nurtured.
