The Supreme Court has canceled a decision made earlier by the Court of Appeal that recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
In a ruling delivered by five judges, the Supreme Court said the Court of Appeal had no legal power to decide who should lead the Labour Party.

They explained that party leadership matters are internal issues that courts should not interfere with.
The case was brought to the Supreme Court by Senator Nenadi Usman and another person. The court agreed with them and ruled in their favor, calling their appeal valid.
At the same time, the Supreme Court dismissed another appeal filed by Abure’s group, saying it had no merit.
Previously, in January 2025, the Court of Appeal had confirmed Abure’s position as chairman based on an earlier decision in November 2024.
But the Supreme Court now says that decision was wrong because it went beyond the court’s legal power.
The Supreme Court emphasized that anything done without proper legal authority is invalid. Therefore, the earlier judgment by the Federal High Court in October 2024 also has no effect.
