In celebration of International Women’s Day 2025, the Nigerian government unveiled an ambitious project to empower 12 million young women in agriculture.
The initiative, launched at the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development in Abuja, aims to promote economic diversification, enhance national security, and reduce the number of out-of-school children.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, represented by Permanent Secretary Mrs. Maryam Ismail, emphasized the transformative potential of this project.
She urged Nigerian women to embrace the initiative, which will be implemented across the country’s six geopolitical zones, aiming to achieve zero hunger and strengthen the capacity of youths and women.
United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, represented by Kimairis Toogood, UN Peace and Development Advisor, delivered a keynote address commending the initiative.
She highlighted the significant role women play in agriculture and the need to address challenges hindering their involvement, such as limited access to resources and gender-based discrimination.
The project seeks to develop a strategic approach to enhancing economic diversification and promoting national security through non-kinetic approaches.
It also aims to strengthen the quality of public schools to equip students with necessary skills for success in life, whether in further education or the workforce.
The launch signifies a commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women in agriculture, aligning with global sustainable development goals.
The initiative is expected to drive sustainable development and economic growth, with the support of the United Nations and the international community.
