Livinus Chibuike Victor Crowned Press Freedom Champion by NUJ FCT Council

In a vibrant showcase of journalistic excellence and democratic advocacy, Livinus Chibuike Victor, Editor-in-Chief of Arabella Star Magazine, has been named Press Freedom Champion by the Federal Capital Territory Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ FCT Council).

The honour was bestowed during the NUJ FCT Press Week celebration held at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja (Transcorp Hilton Abuja), a high-profile gathering that drew leading figures from Nigeria’s media industry, government institutions, civil society organisations, and veteran journalists.

The event served as both a celebration of professional excellence and a reflection on the evolving challenges facing journalism in Nigeria. It brought together media executives, policymakers, and security leaders in recognition of individuals and institutions contributing to the growth of the media landscape and the strengthening of democratic values.

Victor was recognised alongside prominent media executives from Arise TV, News Central, and Leadership Newspaper. The ceremony also honoured several high-ranking national figures, including the Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu, and former Inspector General of Police Mike Okiro. In total, more than 20 journalists received awards across different categories for their contributions to journalism practice and public service.

The Press Freedom Champion Award specifically acknowledges Victor’s sustained advocacy for press freedom and his commitment to protecting the rights and safety of journalists in Nigeria. Organisers highlighted his fearless engagement with issues affecting the media, including intimidation, harassment, and unlawful detention of journalists.

Having personally experienced such challenges in the course of his work, Victor’s professional journey has been marked by resilience and a consistent commitment to free expression. His recognition, according to organisers, reflects both his individual courage and his broader contribution to defending the space for independent journalism.

Colleagues and attendees at the event described the award as “well-deserved,” noting his consistent stance against attacks on media practitioners and his vocal opposition to any form of suppression of press freedom. Many also pointed to his influence in mentoring and inspiring younger journalists to uphold ethical standards and pursue truth-driven reporting even under pressure.

Speakers at the ceremony emphasised that a free and independent press remains essential to Nigeria’s democratic development. They urged government agencies and security institutions to prioritise journalists’ safety and ensure an enabling environment that allows the media to carry out its constitutional role without fear or interference.

The recognition of Livinus Chibuike Victor is widely seen as a significant moment for the journalism community, reinforcing ongoing calls for stronger protection of press freedom in Nigeria. It also highlights the critical role journalists play in holding power to account and shaping public discourse.

Ultimately, the honour stands not only as a personal milestone for Victor but also as a broader statement of solidarity with journalists across the country, underscoring that courage, accountability, and press freedom remain central pillars of a healthy democracy.
