Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has resigned from his position as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Daily Nigerian reported exclusively on Friday.
His resignation is part of a move by the ruling party to calm growing frustration from members in the North-Central zone, who have long demanded that the party’s top position be returned to their region.

According to sources within the party, one of the APC’s national vice chairmen will temporarily take over the role until a new chairman is elected at the party’s national convention scheduled for December 2025.
“There has been serious pressure for months. Key members from the North-Central have continued to push to get the position back,” a party insider told Daily Nigerian. “Ganduje has now decided to step down for the sake of the party, especially as it prepares early for the 2027 elections.”
Ganduje, who served as Governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023, became APC Chairman in August 2023 after the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu, who is from the North-Central region. Since then, Ganduje’s leadership has faced resistance from party members who felt his appointment ignored the party’s zoning principles.
Many senior party figures and regional leaders have openly and privately voiced their displeasure in recent months, calling the situation a “political imbalance” that needs to be corrected.
Ganduje’s resignation is being presented as a step toward unity, aimed at restoring balance and preparing the party for future success.
As of the time of this report, neither Ganduje nor the APC had released an official statement, but sources say plans for a formal handover are already in progress.
His resignation marks another major leadership change in the APC since President Bola Tinubu came to power, showing how internal party politics continue to shift ahead of the 2027 elections.
