Enugu Government Imposes ₦50 Million Fine for Unauthorized Poster Pasting

The Enugu State Government has implemented a ban on the unauthorized pasting of posters on public surfaces, introducing a hefty fine of up to ₦50 million for defaulters.

This measure aims to curb the defacement of public spaces and promote environmental cleanliness.

The General Manager of Enugu State Structures for Signage and Advertisement Agency (ENSSAA) stated that the indiscriminate placement of posters has become a significant issue, leading to visual pollution and additional cleanup costs.

The new regulation seeks to instill discipline and orderliness in public advertising.

The government has warned that strict enforcement measures will be taken against violators, including political parties, businesses, and individuals who fail to obtain proper authorization before displaying posters.

ENSSAA officials will conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance.

Reactions from residents and political stakeholders have been mixed. While some support the move as a way to maintain cleanliness and aesthetics in Enugu, others argue that the fine is excessively high and could stifle political and commercial advertising.

The state government has defended the policy, emphasizing that alternative legal avenues exist for advertising, including designated billboards and approved poster spaces.

Officials insist that the hefty fine is meant to serve as a deterrent rather than a revenue-generation tool.

Environmental activists have praised the policy, saying it will help preserve Enugu’s urban landscape.

However, they have urged the government to also provide affordable and accessible alternatives for those who cannot afford billboard advertising.
