Apple said on Monday that Tim Cook will leave his job as the company’s CEO in September. He will be replaced by John Ternus, who has worked at Apple for many years.
Cook is 65 years old. He will become the executive chairman of Apple’s board. That means he will still work with the company, but he will not be the main leader.

Cook said, “It was the greatest honor of my life to be Apple’s CEO.”
Cook started working at Apple in 1998. He helped the company grow by managing how Apple builds and delivers its products. In 2011, he became CEO after Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, had to leave because of health problems.
Cook helped Apple create many new products and grow the company’s value to about $4 trillion. He also made China the main place where Apple products are built. Most iPhones are put together by a company called Foxconn in Chinese factories.
Arthur Levinson, the current chairman of the board, said, “Tim’s leadership made Apple the best company in the world.”
John Ternus joined Apple’s design team in 2001. Over 20 years, he became a top leader in hardware engineering. He helped create products like the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac.
Ternus said, “I have worked at Apple almost my whole career. I was lucky to work under Steve Jobs and to have Tim Cook as my teacher.”
Apple at 50 Years Old
Apple turns 50 this year. The company now faces new challenges with artificial intelligence (AI). Other companies like Google and Microsoft are moving faster in AI.
Apple promised to make its Siri voice assistant better, but that upgrade was delayed. Instead of fixing Siri itself, Apple asked Google for help.
Under Cook, Apple tried to build a self-driving electric car. But after spending billions of dollars, Apple stopped the project in 2024. Apple also launched a maps service in 2012 that had many mistakes. Cook even wrote a letter to say sorry.
The Apple Vision Pro headset costs $3,500. Even though it uses clever technology, not many people want to buy it.
A business expert named Dan Ives said, “Apple is making a big change in its AI plan. Cook leaving now is a surprise. There will be a lot of pressure on Ternus to do well, especially with AI.”
