AFCON Qualifier: Osimhen to miss Nigeria’s clash with Tanzania

Nigerian forward star, Victor Osimhen, is set to miss Super Eagles of Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Tanzania due to knee injury.

The Galatasaray striker suffered the injury during his club’s 2-0 win against Stuttgart in the UEFA Champions League this week.

Despite playing the entire match without complaint, Galatasaray revealed in a statement that Osimhen was sent to the hospital for further diagnosis on a knee strain where scan confirmed loose body.

The Turkish League champions confirmed Osimhen will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery, but did not disclose the goals machine’s length of absence.

“Our player Victor Osimhen, who suffered a strain in his left knee during our UEFA Champions League match against VfB Stuttgart and was found to have a loose body in MRI scans, is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery tomorrow at Maslak Acıbadem Hospital, performed by our club doctor Yener İnce.”

“Our player has therefore been removed from the squad for tomorrow’s match against Amed S. F.”

Osihmen who will not feature for the club in their clash against second-placed Amedspor, will miss his second consecutive international window.

He was not available as Nigeria struggled to defeat Madagascar, before falling to a shock and disgraceful 3-0 defeat at Guinea-Bissau.

Multiple injuries have prevented him from playing for Nigeria since January at the AFCON 2025 tournament.
