The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has started a nationwide strike because their members did not receive their June 2025 salaries.
ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, confirmed the strike on Monday in Abuja. He said the decision follows a rule made by ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC), which says lecturers should stop working if salaries are not paid within three days of the due date.

Universities like the University of Jos and University of Abuja have already joined the strike.
Professor Piwuna explained that university lecturers have been struggling financially since the government moved their salary system from IPPIS to a new one called GIFMIS. He said their pay is often delayed by one to two weeks, and even when it comes, the amount is small.
“This strike is not about new negotiations,” he said. “It’s because we are suffering from these delays. The Accountant General’s Office has been causing these delays on purpose.”
ASUU says they’ve already met with government officials to complain about the problem, but nothing has been done.
Professor Piwuna also mentioned that the government still owes ₦10 billion from the ₦50 billion Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) meant for lecturers.
He warned that universities where salaries have not been paid will remain on strike until the issue is resolved.
