Lagos Assembly Speaker Meranda Denies Resignation Rumors Amidst Political Turmoil

The Lagos State House of Assembly is currently embroiled in a leadership crisis following the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025.

Mojisola Meranda, who succeeded Obasa as the new Speaker, has been at the center of recent controversies, including rumors of her impending resignation.

On February 19, 2025, reports surfaced suggesting that Speaker Meranda had resigned from her position.

These claims were swiftly debunked by her Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, who stated, “The Speaker has not resigned and there is no plan for that.”

Ajiboye emphasized that Meranda remains in high spirits and fully in charge of the House’s affairs.

The rumors of resignation were further fueled by a circular dated February 17, 2025, allegedly released by Meranda, claiming her resignation.

However, investigations revealed that the letter was unsigned and lacked authenticity.

Ajiboye attributed the spread of such misinformation to “mischief makers” loyal to the impeached Speaker Obasa, aiming to mislead the public and destabilize the current leadership.

The Assembly has been under heightened security, with operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force sealing off the offices of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Clerk.

This action, perceived by some lawmakers as an invasion, has escalated tensions within the Assembly.

Despite these challenges, Speaker Meranda continues to perform her duties, and the Assembly remains on indefinite recess as efforts to resolve the crisis are underway.

The leadership tussle has also seen legal battles, with Obasa challenging his impeachment in court, claiming due process was not followed.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders and observers are keenly watching for resolutions that will restore stability to the legislative arm of Lagos State.
