Boxing Federation Rejects Transgender Boxing in Nigeria

The Interim President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, Azania Omo-Agege, has firmly stated that the federation will not endorse any initiative aimed at promoting transgender boxing in the country.

This declaration comes in response to recent comments by the World Boxing Federation’s president supporting the inclusion of transgender athletes in boxing.

Omo-Agege emphasized that such practices contradict Nigeria’s cultural and ethical values.

In a press briefing, Omo-Agege highlighted the potential challenges and controversies that could arise from introducing transgender boxing in Nigeria. He noted that the federation is committed to maintaining the integrity of the sport and ensuring fair competition among athletes.

The president also mentioned that the federation had consulted with various stakeholders, including coaches, athletes, and sports administrators, before reaching this decision.

The federation’s stance has garnered mixed reactions from the public and human rights organizations. Some applaud the decision, citing the preservation of traditional values and the need for clear guidelines in sports.

Others argue that it undermines inclusivity and the rights of transgender individuals to participate in sports.

This debate reflects the broader global discourse on the inclusion of transgender athletes in competitive sports.

Omo-Agege reiterated that the federation’s primary responsibility is to uphold the standards of boxing in Nigeria. He stressed that any changes to existing policies would require extensive deliberation and consensus among all stakeholders.

The president also called for respect and understanding from the international community regarding Nigeria’s position on this sensitive issue.

Moving forward, the Nigeria Boxing Federation plans to focus on developing grassroots talent and enhancing the sport’s infrastructure.

Omo-Agege expressed optimism about the future of boxing in Nigeria and reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to promoting the sport in line with the nation’s values and principles.
