A fire broke out at the Gidan Rumfa palace where Muhammadu Sanusi, the 16th Emir of Kano, lives. It is believed that unknown people started the fire.
Sources from the palace, who did not want to be named, said the fire happened on Friday night around 11pm. The palace affected the most is the one at Kofar Kudu, where the Emir holds court every Monday.

“The palace at Kofar Kudu was affected. There’s an entrance from inside and another from the front outside. They forced open the door, started the fire, and locked it,” a source said.
The fire destroyed the throne, air conditioners, and other valuable items in the palace.
The Kano State Fire Service spokesperson, Saminu Yusif Abudullahi, said they had not received any calls about the incident.
However, the Chief of Staff to the Emir, Munir Sanusi Bayero, confirmed in a statement on Saturday morning, July 13, 2024, that a fire had occurred in the outer court of the palace at Kofar Kudu. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and the damage was not severe.
The palace is now taking steps to ensure safety and security, and an investigation is underway to find out the cause of the fire and prevent future incidents.
